TREE: Has leaves, stems and roots. Makes chlorophyll (food from sunlight). Gives us lumber, fruit, nuts, shade, clean air, beauty; prevents soil erosion.

CACTUS: Has thick stems that do the work of leaves (make chlorophyll). Some provide fruit, and some have beautiful flowers. Edible cactus is grown in the Negev.

FUNGUS: Can be as small as one cell or as large as several feet tall. Some are mushrooms, yeasts or molds. Do not produce chlorophyll. Provide medicine, food, help other plants grow.

GRASS: Has very narrow leaves, hollow stems and roots. Produce chlorophyll. Provide grains like wheat, and food for animals who graze.

BACTERIA: Are so small that you need a microscope to see them. Have no stems, roots or leaves. Do not produce chlorophyll. Some are helpful, they help with digestion or are used for making yogurt. Some cause illness.

ALGAE: Size ranges from very small to giant. Have no stems, roots or leaves. Live chiefly in water. Produce chlorophyll. Nutricious for both fish and humans. Have other chemical uses as well.
