Ilan Ramon was the first Israeli astronaut. He orbited the earth together with six American astronauts in the Space Shuttle Columbia, which was lost as it re-entered the earth’s atmosphere on February 1, 2003. The photograph to the right was taken by Ilan Ramon from outer space. You can see Israel the way Ilan saw it when he said, “I call upon every Jew in the world to plant a tree in the land of Israel.” You can see green in the photo — trees which Jewish people have already planted through Jewish National Fund. The brown area is the Negev, where JNF is working hard, planting orange trees, olive trees and tomatoes. To plant a tree in Israel visit www.jnf.org.
